Fox KitsEast Nassau. NY
Not Kittens. Fox Kits! I began documenting barn ruins in Rensselaer County several years ago, collecting the crumbling history of days gone by. Strolling toward yet another abandoned structure, a tiny, fuzzy body tumbled toward me, unaware of my presence. And then another. And another. It was a litter of playful fox kits! The little beasties were pouncing about the old hay bales like rambunctious kittens. Having never seen such a sight, my startled mind took minute to register what they truly were.
I spent more time watching than photographing, but captured a few stills while the fox kits chewed on hay, tugged each other’s ears, bumbled over beams, and ducked in and out of the shadows. I captured a bit of sweet video, too, where you can see how oblivious they were to me. So delighted was I, I went back two days later to see them again — to no avail. The fox kits were no longer there, probably moved by their mama after she sensed my presence. If you like these images, my fox kit photographs are available for purchase.
